Case Study
Cairo Street Unitarian Chapel, Warrington

The restoration of wrought iron gates at an historic chapel building.

Dorothea Restorations was contracted to refurbish the wrought iron gates that mark the lower entrance of the burial ground at Cairo Street Unitarian Chapel.

The gates, believed to date from the 1750s, were originally from a house lived in by Joseph Priestley - who was both a well-known scientist (having been credited with the discovery of oxygen) and a Minister of the Unitarian Church.

First, the gates were removed from site and carefully blast cleaned, before being dismantled by our blacksmiths.  New matching wrought iron scrolls
and leaves were made and fitted by fire welding before the gates were
re-assembled by rivetting. They were then painted and re-hung on site onto repaired stone piers.
