Case Study
Chirk Castle

Complex repairs to magnificent iron gates at
a 700 year old marcher fortress.

Chirk Castle magnificent iron gates are dated 1719 and bear the coat-of-arms of the Myddelton family of Chirk Castle.

Dorothea Restorations carried out a survey of the Grade 1 listed cast and wrought ironwork for CADW and the National Trust, and prepared a costed proposal for repairs.

We were subsequently engaged to carry out the complex repairs which involved removing the whole structure to our workshops, making new components and repairing existing, using recycled charcoal wrought iron sheets.

The metalwork was carefully flame-cleaned and prepared for painting, with the client then choosing a traditional lead-based paint-system. Once painting was completed, Dorothea craftsmen then reassembled the whole structure on site. This is a good example of a large-scale, technically complex contact undertaken on a high-profile site to a tight programme .
