Case Study
Iron Bridge, Hewell Grange

Restoring a rediscovered original Repton bridge.

Hewell Grange near Redditch was once a grand country house, today used as part of a larger prison site.

The house featured a garden originally landscaped by Humphrey Repton, and recent work to cut back scrub and wasteland uncovered the remains on an original iron bridge, long since decayed.

To restore the bridge, Dorothea Restorations first had to stabilise it with a new concrete footing, since one of the piers had completely disappeared.

The surviving cast iron work was cleaned and repaired, and new cast iron deck plates were produced (about half had been missing). Finally a quantity of detailing made from recycled wrought iron was fitted.
