Bob Garlick

Blacksmith at Whaley Bridge

I served an apprenticeship at a local restoration firm. Over time blacksmithing became my number one interest and passion. I
originally joined Dorothea Restorations as a welder-fabricator but immediately became a trainee blacksmith.  The Company sent me
to the National School for Blacksmithing at the College of Technology, Hereford where I came out with a merit and the Paul Allen Award for Outstanding Proficiency under the Rural Development Commission’s ‘New Entrant Scheme’.

Since qualifying I have continued to develop my passion for blacksmithing at Dorothea Restorations working on a wide range of interesting and challenging projects. This has included hand forging new wrought iron bolts for the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, manufacturing replica lanterns for an ornate gateway to Lancaster House, and the restoration of the iron screens at Croxteth Hall, Liverpool.

In October 2005 I displayed some of my work at the Three Counties Show, winning first prize and was presented with the Worshipful Company of Blacksmith’s plaque.

I really enjoy designing my own work pieces that I display at local festivals whilst demonstrating on my portable forge.
