The bedrock of our business is the range of skills and techniques employed every day by our team of specialist craftsmen & women.
Our specialism in traditional metalworking and associated crafts is well documented (see Conservation and Restoration
or New-Build and Replication
for details), but what really makes Dorothea Restorations stand apart is our ability to push the norm - to find innovative technical solutions to each
and every new challenge.

Among the techniques pioneered by Dorothea Restorations in recent years are:
  • Carbon fibre wrapping of steel to recreate 100% of the strength of the original item
  • Wrought iron welding
  • Pressed decorative zinc
  • Decorative copper roofing techniques
  • Curved and bent glazing in iron structures, including double-glazing
To achieve this unique blend of traditional craft skill and modern engineering innovation, we recruit our teams from a wide range of engineering and craft backgrounds. Most have enjoyed the rounded education of a traditional engineering apprenticeship, and all share a passion for craft and problem-solving in the fields of engineering and architectural metalwork.

At the heart of every project for every client is a Dorothea Restorations supervisor. Our project supervisors set the standard for excellence
in specialist metalwork, combining a thorough knowledge and understanding of engineering principles with the hands-on experience of many years in the field.

To ensure these skills and principles are handed on the next
generation of craftsmen and women, Dorothea Restorations runs
its own apprenticeship programme in partnership with the Brunel Training Group in Bristol and Stockport Engineering Training Association (SITA) in Stockport.
