Case study: St Nicholas Market Iron Fountain

This cast iron fountain, mounted in one of the walls of St Nicholas Market, was cast by the Coalbrookdale foundry and installed in 1859. Bristol City Council employed Dorothea to undertake the restorations and return it to its original glory.

There was considerable damage to the cast iron structure, with pieces broken and missing. Much of the original paint finish had deteriorated.

A supervisor from our Bristol works took charge of the fountain restoration works, removing the later concrete infill repairs, fitting new cast iron repair pieces, carefully cleaning the fountain back to a sound surface and repainting it in an agreed colour scheme.
